Kim Beaton

Over the summer months i had been researching how to go about creating an inexpensive creature sculpture for my final MA show. Whilst doing so i discovered Kim Beaton and her amazing Troll sculpture. With a further research into the subject i was shocked and delighted when it was revealed Kim had used Paper Mache to create this staggering sculpture.
With so much emphasis these days on recycling materials and the fact it was a much cheaper alternative to other 3D methods i was delighted a this gave me hope of achieving my desire.

I also seized the opportunity to email Kim and ask her advice on the subject which kindly she replied to offering a substantial amount of help and knowledge and also asking me to forward photographs of my completed sculpture which i look forward to doing.

Karen Croner

From this i went on to discover Karen Croner's Paper Mache works. Hers are less Fantasy based and more representative of real life forms, but i do like the levels of detailing displyed in her pieces. Below are some of those pieces.

I love how Karen has captured form in these animal pieces not just through paint effects but also through the methods of building them. I also contacted Karen and asked her advice; what materials she uses and how she captures form using them, which she also replied to which has helped understand further how to go about creating one of these sculptures for myself.
